Creating an alien species is a creative process. You will be able to decide what the species looks like, how they act, and even create the history of whole planets. There are many details to consider, but with some original thought and a commitment to revising and developing characters, you can create your own fictional alien species.

As a home gardener, you can easily develop new varieties adapted to your tastes and local climate, or to low-care gardening techniques. Often, all that's needed is a sharp eye and an idea of what to look for. Productive, low-care food plants are especially important in these days of changing values, declining resources and chemical-dependent hybrid food plants. According to Breed Your Own Vegetable Varietiesthe easiest way to create new plant varieties is by simple 'selection.

If any plants don't show the traits you are looking for, you prevent them from pollinating the plants you have selected. It's possible to see changes in your variety the very next season! Good candidates for selection might show better-than-average productivity under your gardening conditions, or high drought tolerance, or particularly good taste for instance.

After a few seasons of saving seeds from only plants with the desired traits, a new strain can be created that is markedly different from the original variety.

Be careful not to go overboard when deciding which plants will be kept from reproducing, however—a healthy degree of genetic variability is essential to the vigor of any breeding population. If you become too selective and reduce the total number of parent plants to too-low a number, your variety will soon weaken from loss of genetic variability. A good idea for maintaining some genetic diversity when selecting new varieties is to plant some seeds of the original variety in with your newly-selected seeds each season —especially after a season or two of aggressively developing the new traits.

This will slow the process of creating your new variety over the short term, but will ensure that your seeds maintain their vigor over the long term because of having a sufficiently broad range of genetic characteristics.

An interesting example of ensuring continued vigor in a new variety by occasionally reintroducing some of its original ancestral genetic variability is the traditional Mexican practice of allowing an occasional teosinte plant corn's wild ancestor to grow among the corn plants in their fields.

The campesinos know that the wild teosinte will add genetic variability, adaptability and vigor to their domesticated seed stocks. The selection process has complementary advantages and disadvantages.

Careful consideration should be given to balancing these influences so as not to cause damage to a variety's genetic health and diversity. Selection used by itself always results in the loss of genetic material. Without taking steps to counteract this loss, a selected variety's gene pool will be smaller and less diverse than the gene pool of the original variety a gene pool is the sum total of all the genetic traits contained in the entire population—no one plant will contain all the genes available to the variety as a whole.

This genetic narrowing may include genes that are useful elsewhereor under different growing conditions, or even under your own conditions but in a different year. The group of plants within your newly selected variety will not have the genetic ability to respond successfully to as wide a range of situations as the variety that was started with—even though the new variety may be better adapted to your situation during a particular growing season.

CREATE A CREATURE - Inventing NEW Animal Species!

The reason the new variety's gene pool will be smaller is that the new variety was formed by subtracting traits from the original variety by keeping particular plants from reproducing. The practice of planting a few of the original variety's seeds with your new selection is one way to help counteract this trend toward genetic loss. The above point i. Don't start with a variety already overly-refined by earlier selections.Using this site means trees will be planted.

Creating an original species and everything that comes with it can be a daunting task, but it's also a fun task as you get to be creative. How big of a task it will be depends entirely on you and how original and creative you want to get. The task could be small, like creating a new version of an elf, but it could also be enormous, like creating a completely unique and original species of aliens with all sorts of weird physical traits.

But like every big task, you can make it easier by turning it into many smaller tasks, which is what I'll be doing in this guide. I've also created a guide on creating animal species, right here. The biggest difference between these two is that there's a whole lot more to cover for animals, for example, for humans and elves you won't have to think about their position in the food chain, they're smart enough to be at the top or at least smart enough to avoid the top predators if they're ranked lower.

Before we start to create a species we'll have to get a rough idea of what we want. Do we want to simply alter an existing fantasy species and make it our own, do we want to create a hybrid of two or more species like a mix of orcs, centaurs and angels or do we want to create something completely original? The choice will depend both on how original and creative you want to get and on how much work you're willing to do.

There's also the issue of restrictions with the first two choices. Creating an alternative version of an elf is great, but people have a general idea of what an elf is.

Taking away the pointy ears will generally create something which is often no longer considered an elf. The same is somewhat true for hybrids. You may have mixed a couple of species together, but the view people have of the original creatures might still have to shine through if you rely too much on those aspects, especially when you describe them.

But there's a whole lot more freedom when creating a hybrid. You'll have the most freedom when creating an entirely new species. Your rules, your imagination and your creature, but also your work. Some will love this, others might think it's too much hassle. The choice is yours. We're now at the point at which we'll design our species, which is arguably the hardest part, especially if you have a creative block.

But the same old rule of turning a big task into smaller tasks will apply here. Start at one end and work your way to the other. In the case of creating a species it'll likely be either its head or its feet, if it has any. But where to continue from there on? Well, one way to create a species is to simply try out bits and pieces and see if they fit, if nothing else it'll at least give you ideas and inspiration for what you do want.

Another way of creating a species is to design it from a survival point of view. What would your species have needed to survive in its natural habitat before it was intelligent enough to bend the world to its needs.

Most survival aspects can be toned down a lot since they're no longer needed, over time they would've declined just like how, for example, human body hair has declined. To illustrate this way of thinking, here's an example: We start at the head as that's often one of the most prominent aesthetic features of any species. I want it to have hair, mostly for aesthetic purposes, but I only want head hair, no facial hair.

The eyes will be big, the species is slightly nocturnal and would have developed big eyes naturally or highly optimized eyes, like cats. It's another choice which is mostly affected by aesthetics, but it also makes sense from a survival point of view. Skipping ahead to the torso, it's long, slender and muscular.Join our email newsletter to receive free updates! The children were asked to design and label their own animal thinking about how it is adapted to live in its environment, diet, camouflage etc.

It was a great way to assess children's knowledge and understanding of the associated vocabulary. They loved doing such an open ended task and using their imaginations. The children could also make their animal from clay and present it to the class. The 'Build Your Wild Self' site might also be a useful tool for this activity. I have used "Build your wild self" before, just for students to make their own desktop backgrounds.

I love the idea of using it to focus on habitats, features etc. Share this delightful counting book with your class and then try some of our suggested classroom activities!
